(183) It is related by Abu Hurairah and Abu Khallad that the Apostle of God said: “When you see a person whose condition is that God has endowed him with Zuhd, [i.e., the quality of indifference and detachment to the world and taciturnity [i.e., keeping the tongue safe from vain and foolish talk], seek his company and associate habitually with him because wisdom is caused to be carried to the person by God who is like that.”

Commentary.-The causing of wisdom to be carried to such a person means that he perceives the truth correctly and speaks only when it is proper and beneficial. His company has the touch of alchemy. About wisdom it has been said in the Quran: He unto whom wisdom is given, he truly hath received abundant good. (ii : 269)
