Muhtarram Mufti Sahib.

Assalaam-o-Alaikum

There is one brother in our area whose father got a heart attack and is hospitalized now. The doctors are trying to keep him alive through machines etc. He is in comma for the last two weeks. Doctors say that his brain is damaged and he will not be able to survive of his own even though he may come to senses (which seems rather difficult, and has very little chances). Chances of his survival are very little, so the doctors seek the permission from the family members to take these machines off and let him die.His family members want to know whether they should give permission to doctors to take these machines and tubes off and let him breath of his own. If he could, fine, otherwise let him die because he is already in a miserable condition. Should he be allowed to stay in comma and breath through machines?

Dear Uzair Bazi
Assalaam-o-Alaikum
Ref. Your query of 29-5-2002 Treatment is actually SUNNAH and not FARD or WAAJIB. Therefore, if the relatives so desire, the machines may be removed.
Allah knows the best.

Darul-Iftah
Jamia Ashrafia, Lahore.
